My early background in the Citizens Advice Bureau service gave me an appreciation of the importance of access to justice with an awareness of the barriers to this, particularly among those facing greatest disadvantage. My later work in philanthropy included grant making programmes in the justice sector, so when I came across IfJ I immediately recognised the unique role of intermediaries in levelling the legal playing field, as well as the importance of IfJ itself in both raising their profile of this work and seeking to improve how the system works. This really is a small charity which punches well above its weight.
