Course facilitators: Paula Backen and Rachel Cohen: Intermediaries

Who is this course for?

This course is for those intermediaries who have completed the basic workshop and would like to develop those skills and strategies for working in the challenges of the justice system. Participants will learn about working with suspects, discuss real case studies, address managing conflicts and practice simplification techniques.

Event aim / objective:

We aim to provide the forum for further professional development for those intermediaries who have already started working in this field, by evaluating the current challenges in the court approach to the use of intermediaries, and offer the opportunity to discuss controversies in our work e.g. boundaries, asserting our role, and how we may develop the professionalism of the role further.

Course requirements: IfJ Full, International or Associate member. Join here.

Previous Attendance at IFJ one day course or Day 1 of this 2 day course RI experience of working on at least 5 intermediary trials.

Course content:

The Course will consider:

• The current case law and court approach and how this is impacting on this work – the good the bad and the ugly.

• Case studies – particularly with regard to assessment and recommendations

• Working with suspects – the process and our role

• Emotional resilience and conflict in the justice system

Participants will share their experiences as well as being provided with other real (anonymised) cases to discuss.

The course will help participants to look at solutions to more complex issues.

We will also spend some time on real practice of simplifying language.
