The c ourse will cover:

Examples of aids that are created prior to assistance and ‘in-the-moment’ depending on the cu rrent needs of a vulnerable person at an interview \, hearing\, conference and trial.
Practical recommendations de rived from the research literature and provision o f a summary of common critiques of the communicati on aids research literature.
Nuanced considerations relevant to the implementation of communication aids:

~~th e importance of non-verbal communication and gestu re when introducing and managing aids\;~~

developmental differen ces affecting the usefulness and reliability of ai ds\; \n

the tim ing of introduction of communication aids\;

considerations reg arding who should introduce the aid\; and

the types of questioning that should accompany the use of aids.

Course Method:

The workshop is run in the form of a small group training. The presen ters will present information and will invite high levels of participation and sharing of knowledge and ideas. Prepared slides/handouts guide the proc ess rather than impart information.
