Cross-Cultural Communication for Intermediaries and Justice Professionals

This course is an introduction to working with people from different cultural backgrounds in the Justice System. It is aimed at a range of professionals who work with people from different cultural backgrounds, especially appropriate for intermediaries. It will build an understanding of the cognitive and behavioural science of culture and how this can impact human cognition, memory and their testimonyaccuracy.

Course Content: 

This course offers practical cross-cultural communication training for various justice professionals working with people from different cultures, especially those who supports their communication (such as intermediaries), evidence gathering and evaluation. Participants will learn about various levels of culture, how they can affect human cognition, memory and language use, and learn about ways to foster better cross-cultural communication. 

The session aims to equip attendees with practical tools to reduce communication misunderstanding and barriers to evidence gathering arisen from cultural differences.

There will be some theory and discussion about culture and how it can influence our perception, memory and speech.

Participants will have the opportunity to have some individual reflection time as well as group discussion time using breakout rooms.

Course Aims/Objectives: 

Participants will:

1. Have an understanding of the different layers of culture.

2. Appreciate how culture influence human in daily lives and in our interpersonal communication.

3. Understand how culture can influence  human cognition and memoryaccuracy. 

4. Learn how culture can affectinvestigative interviews and witness testimony.

5. Develop an awareness of strategies to manage the misunderstanding and inaccurate evidence caused by cultural differences.

 

Course Method:

The workshop is run in the form of a small group training. The presenters will present information and will invite high levels of participation and sharing of knowledge and ideas. Prepared slides/handouts guide the process rather than impart information.

  • Guidance for further reading-Bibliography

- Participants to log on 15 minutes prior to start of each session.

- It is required that all participants keep their cameras on throughout the workshop.

- Participants to complete online feedback form post workshop.
